Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Double: Media reports out of China say that Apple‘s (AAPL) upcoming iPhone 5S will feature a new screen with much higher resolution than its current Retina screens, MacRumors notes. The reports indicate that Apple will narrow the bezels on the new flagship phone and offer a screen with 1.5 million pixels. That’s about twice as many pixels offered by the iPhone 5′s screen. The new phone is projected to ship in September. The report did not reveal whether the iPhone 5S would keep the iPhone 5′s 4-inch screen or adopt a larger screen. Previous rumors have suggested that Apple intends to maintain the screen size and technology found in the iPhone 5 in its upcoming iPhone. However, rival smartphone makers, including Samsung, have recently introduced models with screens that have better resolution than the iPhone 5, possibly prompting Apple to boost its resolution in order to remain competitive.
Historic: An Apple-1 computer featuring a motherboard hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sold for $671,000 over the weekend, CNN notes. The computer, originally made in the mid-1970′s, was purchased by an unnamed buyer from Asia during an auction by Germany’s Breker auction house. Included with the working computer was a letter from the late Steve Jobs, addressed to the machine’s original buyer. The computer is thought to be one of only about a half dozen working Apple-1 machines, of which only 200 were produced. Last year, an Apple-1 brought in $640,000 at a Breker auction.
Probe: European regulators have launched an investigation of Apple’s iPhone sales practices, the Financial Times notes. The European Commission is said to be assessing the company’s subsidy agreements with wireless carriers in Europe to determine if the deals violate antitrust rules. The investigation was apparently initiated by complaints from carriers over Apple’s practices. No charges have been announced as of yet and the investigation is reported to be in its early stages. The European Commission has previously examined Apple’s warranty policies, but did not bring charges against the company.
