Victoria’s Secret Says No to Masectomy Bras

[1]Despite an online petition from breast cancer survivors, Limited Brands’ (LTD[2]) Victoria’s Secret has decided against making bras to fit women who undergo mastectomies[3].

The lingerie maker met with Allana Maiden, whose mother had difficulty finding bras after she had a mastectomy, to discuss the possibility of producing bras for mastectomy patients. Maiden had started a petition to Victoria’s Secret that received more than 100,000 online signatures, the Daily News noted.

However, Limited Brands determined that producing bras for mastectomy patients would have been too complicated and costly. It said it would continue to support breast cancer research instead. The company is a major contributors to a variety of breast cancer charities.

Maiden expressed disappointment with the company’s decision, noting that Victoria’s Secret specializes in helping “women feel beautiful” and that mastectomy patients liker her mother shouldn’t be excluded from that.

Maiden noted that high-end retailer Nordstrom (JWN[4]) had proven helpful in finding bras that fit her mother. She said that she had hoped that Victoria’s Secret — which has 1,000 stores nationwide — would have been able to help women across the country.

Earlier this month, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie announced that she had undergone a double mastectomy[5] after learning that she carries gene variants that put her at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Shares of Limited Brands dipped slightly in Thursday morning trading.
