Waiting: Speculation is swirling over what products Apple (AAPL[3]) might announce at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference[4] (WWDC), AppleInsider notes. The WWDC will be held in San Francisco early next month and is a platform for Apple executives to unveil or at least hint at new devices and software. According to journalist Jim Dalrymple, the company will not debut a new iPhone or iPad, but will show off new Macs. The updated Macs may feature Intel‘s (INTC[5]) new Haswell processors. Available inventories of MacBook Air computers have been shrinking as the WWDC approaches, signaling that an updated MacBook Air could be one device debuted that the event. Apple watchers are also looking for possible refreshes to the Mac Mini, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro lines. Apple is also widely expected to launch a new version of iOS at the WWDC. Reports indicate that iOS 7 has received a complete makeover directed by Apple’s lead designer Jony Ive and could represent a major departure from prior versions of the software. Dalrymple, however, thinks that changes to iOS 7 will be more modest.

Hired: The former chief of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a new job[6], the New York Times notes. Lisa P. Jackson, who headed the EPA during President Barack Obama’s first administration, has joined Apple as senior environmental adviser. Jackson, who was heavily criticized by republicans during her tenure as EPA head, will report to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Critique: Speaking at the AllThingsD technology conference[7] on Tuesday, Tim Cook called Google‘s (GOOG[8]) high-tech glasses potentially “difficult” to sell in the consumer market, CNN noted. Google Glass is expected to cost about $1,500 per pair. Cook, who wears glasses, expressed skepticism that the glasses would prove a hit with buyers. “I don’t know a lot of people that wear them that don’t have to,” he noted, speaking of glasses in general. He did note that wearable computers — like a potential smartwatch — were an area of interest for Apple, saying “it’s an area that’s ripe for exploration.” Apple is widely expected to introduce a smartwatch sometime in the next few years.
