The company announced the temporary move — which comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it was investigating the health effects of caffeine-added products — yesterday, the Associated Press reports.
After talks between Wrigley and the FDA, company president Casey Keller said it was making the move “out of respect” for the agency and its investigation. The company started selling Alert Energy gum — each stick of which has the caffeine of one-half a cup of coffee — last month.
In a statement, Keller said, “After discussions with the FDA, we have a greater appreciation for its concern about the proliferation of caffeine in the nation’s food supply. There is a need for changes in the regulatory framework to better guide the consumers and the industry about the appropriate level and use of caffeinated products.”
The FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods, Michael Taylor, praised Wrigley for its actions. “We hope others in the food industry will exercise similar restraint,” Taylor said.
Last week, the FDA announced that it was investigating the health effects of caffeinated foods. Medical researchers have expressed concerns about the potentially harmful effects — especially among the young — of the proliferation of caffeine-added products.
