3 Hot Gadgets for a Top Shelf Summer

Top Shelf showcases luxury vacations, goods, restaurants and more that you can indulge in after your investing pays off.

TopShelf (3)While today’s summer months aren’t full of the freedom and fresh air from those of my youth, I’m certain that will change soon … or at least eventually.

Retirement likely will be the easiest way to reclaim it, but even eliminating the season’s hassles and finding ways to make the most of the warm weather will do in the meantime.

Luckily, plenty of fancy gadgets can help do just that. Here’s a quick preview of some hot summer goods:

Less Lawncare

There are few things worse than mowing the lawn in the oppressive summer heat. On the flip side, there are few things cooler than owning a robot that can do it for you.

Sure, it’s not a walking, talking, Jetsons-style robot, but the LawnBott still will do the trick. This sleek and convenient robotic lawn mower can manage up to 1.25 acres on a single battery, has an “inclinometer” to deal with slopes, and features an automatic spiral mode for thick or high grass.

Plus, if you — like my dad — are in a neverending contest with the neighbors for the nicest looking lawn, the LawnBott could be the competitive advantage you need. Mowing twice a week — according to the company, of course — will give you the healthiest lawn, and the LawnBott will allow you such quality landscaping without having to spend extra time or extra green on mowing services.

With Father’s Day right around the corner, you could give your pops the gift of one less chore and a lot more free time. Or you could add one to your own wish list. The base model, though, will set you back at least $4,000.

Less Sun

Sun is one of summer’s best features — except for when it’s staring right back into your eyes.

I generally settle for cheap sunglasses — usually from a quick-stop store like CVS (CVS) — because I specialize in leaving them at restaurants or sitting on them. But I do see the benefit of investing in a nicer pair, and hope that one day I eliminate the clumsiness and lack of funds that are holding me back from better frames, polarized lenses and other add-ons.

One upgrade that’s out there: Mp3 earbuds, as featured on the Oakley Thump 2. Those aren’t my usual 10-buck plastic pairs, though. Pricetags for high-end shades with tunes reach into the triple digits.

The Churada 7eye sunglasses are another sporty example. Beyond a plethora of fancy lenses — you can choose from a variety of polarized and photochromic options — they also feature an “AirShield” that helps fit them to your face comfortably and perfectly.

More Fun

You’re going to need sunglasses that can weather wind, dust and high speeds for this final gadget. Because what better way is there to regain fresh air and freedom than to get yourself a big-kid scooter?

The perfect summer splurge, if you ask me, is a maxi-scooter — those sleek faux motorcycles you see folks touring foreign countries with. Piaggio‘s (PIAGF) Vespa is one popular brands, while Honda (HMC), Harley-Davidson (HOG), Suzuki (SZKMF), BMW and more also offer models.

For the full experience, I’d opt for a sleek red one that can squeeze through city streets and also hold its own on the roadways — like this Vespa GTS 300 in dragon red — but the choice is yours.

Of course, the first step to affording any of these top shelf gadget is simple and has nothing to do with sun or summer: Be smart with your money.
