Ben & Jerry’s to Stop Using GMO Ingredients

Its North American products will be GMO free by 2014

The popular ice cream brand says it will have eliminated any ingredient that uses GMO foods in its North American products by 2014 and will only use suppliers that receive Fairtrade certification, the Daily Mail notes.

Currently, Ben & Jerry’s says that 80% of its ingredients are known to be GMO-free. The company says that a single flavor can comprise 40 different components. Ben & Jerry’s makes about 80 ice cream flavors and a total of 200 different products.

Much of the anger over GMO foods has focused on Monsanto (MON), which makes genetically-modified corn and soybean seeds. Lawmakers included a provision in a recent spending bill that gives GMO producers immunity against litigation.

Monsanto was recently the target of a worldwide protest against GMO foods.

Shares of Unilever climbed modestly in Monday morning trading.
