Digital License Plates Coming to a Vehicle Near You?

South Carolina could be bringing us the future of license plates.

According to[1] The Daily Caller, the state is considering a switch to electronic license plates, which would allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to alter the plates’ display. Expired plates? They could start flashing “EXPIRED” in bright red letters. The same for stolen vehicles.

The plates could also be updated to identify uninsured drivers or any number of indicators. And, if necessary, they could be used to track cars — but only with the help of the DMV and cellular carriers, and only if court ordered.
