Don Thompson told attendees at an investors conference that he had shed 20 pounds during the last 12 months, despite eating McDonald’s food every day. Thompson attributed his weight loss to regular exercise and portion control, WebProNews notes.
Health advocates have assailed fast food restaurants like McDonald’s — as well as soft drink makers like Coca-Cola (KO) — in recent years, criticizing the companies for advertising that lures young people to consume their calorie-laden offerings and sugary drinks.
At a shareholders meeting last month, Thompson was rebuked by a 9-year-old girl who accused the company of “tricking kids” into eating its food.
Thompson rejects the criticism, noting that people have responsibility to make their own food decisions. He notes that Europeans have lower obesity rates than Americans, largely because they get more exercise.
Shares of McDonald’s rose fractionally in Tuesday morning trading.
