HPV Vaccine Shows Dramatic Success in Teen Girls

A new study shows promising results in the human papillomavirus vaccine’s ability to prevent infection. The study, which lasted from 2003 to 2010, showed a 56% decrease of HPV infection rates[1] in girls.

Currently there are two different vaccines[2]: Gardasil, which is produced by Merck (MRK[3]), and Cervarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK[4]).

The vaccine isn’t being met with applause by everyone, though.

“Some parents have the concern that giving them the human papillomavirus vaccine is giving them permission to have sex,” Dennis Cunningham — an infectious disease pediatrician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio — told Bloomberg[5].

Medical officials argue that this isn’t the case[6], and instead say it’s similar to how we vaccinate for other diseases long before there is a chance of exposure.
