When Mindy Crandell allowed an elderly lady to cut in front of her in a convenience store line, she probably didn’t think much of it.
However, she’ll probably be thinking about it a lot from now on. It turns out that little old lady bought the winning ticket to a $590 million Powerball jackpot. Accepting her prize, 84-year-old Gloria Mackenzie thanked the player “let me go ahead of them” to purchase the ticket, CNN notes.
The clerk at the Publix store in Zephyrhills, Florida, actually offered to let Crandell buy her ticket first, but she declined.
Mackenzie opted to let the computer choose the numbers on her single ticket. She decided to forgo three decades of lottery installment payments and accepted a $370.9 million payout, before taxes.
Experts say that even split second differences between the time when the machine operator hits the button to generate a random ticket produce completely different sets of numbers.
Crandell is philosophical about the situation, noting that her daughter Mallory told her that “its better to be patient than rich.”
