It’s been seven years since Superman last hit Hollywood, but while Superman Returns was a failure, its predecessor Man of Steel is proving the big, blue Boy Scout can keep up with the times. Man of Steel shattered expectations by bringing in a whopping $113.1 million over the weekend, not including the $12 million it brought in Thursday.
Man of Steel broke records by earning more on its opening weekend than any other movie in June. The previous record-holder was Toy Story 3 with a $110.3 million opening weekend.
Thanks to that performance, Man of Steel could get a sequel or even be a trilogy.
“Anything over $100 million means the franchise is back,” Exhibitor Relations vice president and chief analyst Jeff Bock told USA TODAY. “The studio gave the movie the right tone for today’s audiences — something dark.”
The success is likely due to the darker tone in Man of Steel as compared to the more easy-going and almost campy feel of earlier movies in the franchise.
Director Zack Snyder is no stranger to dark themes in comic book movies, with his adaptations of 300 and Watchmen being praised for their dark and gritty style.
