In addition to hurricanes, alligators and snakes, Floridians now have something else to watch out for: giant mosquitoes.
Known as gallinippers, the huge mosquitoes are 20 times the size of common varieties. Officials in Central Florida’s Seminole County have now spotted the over-sized mosquitoes, ClickOrlando notes.
The arrival of the gallinippers was forecast earlier this year by scientists at the University of Florida. A rainy spring and early summer is expected to drive their population higher. The county will spray swamp areas with anti-mosquito treatments to help control the bug’s spread.
People bitten by gallinippers usually experience a sharp sting and are described as “aggressive.” However, unlike other mosquitoes, they do not carry any dangerous viruses.
