New York Times to Reduce Free Articles on Mobile App

The limit of free articles is part of an effort to better balance the mobile app to the website

New York Times (NYT), in an effort provide balance between its mobile app and website, is going to limit the number of articles that can be read for free on its mobile app to three, reports Bloomberg.

The changes will go into effect June 27, affecting all versions of the app, and will offer a peek into what comes with a subscription, with a seven-day free trial to the app’s users.

The New York Times knew of the advantage mobile readers had over desktop readers.

“We always knew there was an imbalance,” Denise F. Warren, an executive vice president of the company, told The New York Times. “We wanted to restore that balance between the Web site and the apps.”

While the change is an unwelcome one to those not subscribed to The New York Times, it still beats desktop readers who, without a subscription, are limited to 10 articles a month.
