Last week, the NFL adopted a new policy that limits the size and sort of bags that can be carried into stadiums on game day. Under the new policy, fans are permitted to bring only one small, transparent bag as well as a separate hand-sized clutch bag. The policy was strongly backed by the NFL’s Committee on Stadium Security, the Washington Post notes.

The NFL has been reviewing its security policies since April. The league said that the new policy was not influence by the April bombings at the Boston Marathon, which killed three people.

Among the items no longer allowed into stadiums during games are  “purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size,” according to a statement issued by the NFL.

Fans took to social media to vent about the new policy, whose ban on purses especially irritated female fans.

The restrictions will take effect starting with pre-season games later this summer.
