After introducing the Wii U in November, Nintendo sold just 3.45 million of the consoles through March. It had originally forecast sales of 5.5 million units. Sales have been dampened by a lack of high profile games for the console. In fact, there are just 108 games designed for the Wii U, compared to 1,023 for its earlier Wii console, Bloomberg notes.
The deal with Unity could bring many games originally designed for smartphones and tablets to the Wii U. Mobile device gaming is growing in popularity, challenging the dominance of console makers like Nintendo, Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE). Nintendo claims that more than 1,000 game makers have proposed bringing web-based games to the console since it announced its partnership with Unity.
Further hurting sales of the Wii U, most of the games developed for it will also play on the older Wii console, reducing the incentive for consumers to purchase the newer device.
Shares of Nintendo rose more than 3% in Wednesday morning trading.
