Project Loon: Google Launches Web-by-Balloon Program

google logo Project Loon: Google Launches Web by Balloon ProgramGoogle (GOOG) has announced another product straight out of sci-fi: providing people in rural areas with Internet … via solar-powered balloons.

Last weekend, Google officially launched Project Loon, with a test that took place near Christchurch, New Zealand. The experiment to provide a small rural community with cheap internet.

The balloons are designed to charge in four hours and save extra energy for after hour flights. Not wanting to have to work around aircraft or animals, the balloons are positioned at 20 kilometers above the Earth.

The Internet provided by these balloons won’t be as fast as the Internet found in a major city, but at speeds similar to 3G, it will definitely beat dial-up.
