The Supreme Court reached a decision today on if same-sex married couples should receive spousal benefits.
The 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that denied benefits to same-sex couples was ruled unconstitutional, with the Justices split 5 to 4, reports The Washington Post.
The ruling doesn’t touch on same-sex marriage as an American right, but the subject is likely to be brought to the Supreme Court in years to come.
“We may in the future have to resolve challenges to state marriage definitions affecting same-sex couples,” John G. Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States, wrote to The Washington Post. “That issue, however, is not before us in this case.”
