A full-sized sedan from General Motors (GM) has beat out rivals from European and Japanese manufacturers to become the highest scoring sedan in Consumer Reports ranking of 2014 models.
The redesigned Chevrolet Impala received a score of 95. Among all vehicles tested by Consumer Reports, only the BMW 1 Series coupe and Tesla‘s (TSLA) Model S received higher scores. This marks the first time in two decades that an American sedan has topped the category, Bloomberg noted.
The 2014 Impala’s performance is particularly noteworthy since its prior version scored at the bottom of the sedan rankings.
Consumer Reports noted that the Impala “rides like a luxury sedan, with a cushy and controlled demeanor, while delivering surprisingly agile handling.”
This year, GM is introducing 18 redesigned or new vehicle models.
Despite the high scores and a glowing review, Consumer Reports hasn’t issued a recommendation for the new Impala due to a lack of reliability data. The car will have to shine in both crash tests and Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey before the organization will officially recommend it.
Shares of GM fell modestly in Thursday morning trading.
