Handwritten Edgar Allen Poe Poem Fetches $300K

Collector buys "The Conqueror's Worm"

The original handwritten manuscript of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Conqueror Worm” has just been sold for $300,000, a much higher price than the $20,000 it was expected to sell for.

The Associated Press reports that a collector bought the poem at an auction in Marion, Massachusetts. After winning the item, the new owner was given 10 days to verify the authenticity of the manuscript which contains Poe’s signature.

A curator at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia thought that the original manuscript has been lost, but it had actually been in the hands of a Rhode Island family since the 1920s.

“The Conqueror’s Worm” was first published in Graham’s Magazine in the 1843 and later released as part of a collection of Poe’s poetry in 1845.
