After the tragedy, a community foundation raised $7.7 million for survivors of the mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Under guidelines proposed by advisors, families of children killed in the shooting would receive $281,000. The families of children who witnessed the murders would receive $20,000 each, the Daily News notes.

Additionally, two teachers who were hurt during the incident would split $150,000. The donated funds are expected to be paid to recipients next month.

Responding to the proposals at a community meeting on Thursday, some questioned why donated funds were not being given directly to the victims themselves.

On December 14, a lone gunman killed 26 children and teachers at the suburban school before killing himself as emergency responders closed in.
