Discount carrier JetBlue (JBLU) will become the first airline to offer Sam Adams beer in a can. Boston Beer’s founder Jim Koch says he is in discussions with other airlines to carry cans of Sam Adams, dubbed “Sam Cans” by beer aficionados, CNBC notes.
Airlines once carried bottled beers, including Sam Adams. But cost-cutting in recent years led them to ditch bottles in favor of cans, which are more convenient to store and weigh less.
Boston Beer spent $1 million to develop a can it felt was best suited to holding Sam Adams. The new can was unveiled in February.
Canned beers comprised 53% of beer sales last year. That compares to just 48% seven years ago.
News of the sky-bound Sam Cans comes as the brand is battered by anger over a recent ad that altered the language of the Declaration of Independence.
Shares of Boston Beer fell marginally in Wednesday morning trading.
