The popular coffee shop chain produces the sodas with a carbonation machine, creating soft drinks with flavors ranging from lemon ale to spiced root beer. The company is currently trying out the new sodas on customers in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta. It conducted a previous test in Seattle, the Wall Street Journal notes.
The idea behind the new sodas may be to increase store traffic during afternoon hours, which are not high coffee-consumption times.
Starbucks is looking to expand its brand beyond coffee. In 2011, it removed the word “coffee” from its logo.
Recently, the chain acquired a chain of tea shops and a bakery chain.
Shares of Starbucks rose almost 1% in Monday morning trading.
