While her name is synonymous with Harry Potter, it seems British author J.K. Rowling wants to emerge from shadow of the young wizard that she created.
Over the weekend, it emerged the Rowling has penned a mystery novel, published under the pen name Robert Galbraith. The novel — titled The Cuckoo’s Calling — received critical applause, especially as it was billed as the first literary effort from a former military man, the Associated Press notes.
The ruse was discovered by the U.K.’s Sunday Times, which noticed that Galbraith and Rowling had the same agent, editor and publisher. The newspaper also noted certain stylistic similarities between the mystery novel and Rowling’s work.
Faced with the newspaper’s report, Rowling released a statement admitting that she’d penned the novel. She said she’d hoped to “keep the secret a little longer” because writing as someone else had been “such a liberating experience.”
Rowling’s deception drew comparisons to a similar scheme by American author Stephen King, who published several novels under the name Richard Bachman before he was unmasked.
Now that the true author of The Cuckoo’s Nest is known, the book is flying off British bookstore shelves.
