Hot dog sales went down more than 3% in 2012 from 2011 making it the third consecutive year sales have declined.
Ronald Plain, a professor of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri, says America’s declining birth rate, along with changing immigration patterns and demographic profile may be to blame for the decrease in hot dog sales, reports Bloomberg.
Though some believe that other reasons are causing frankfurter sales to decline.
“Higher raw-material costs are leading to higher retail price points,” Janet Riley, president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, told Bloomberg. “Consumers are very sensitive to that.”
Despite the declining sales hot dogs make a good addition to any July 4 cookout.
