timhortonsCanadian coffee and snack chain Tim Hortons (THI) is adding a product meant to appeal to consumers with food sensitivity.

Beginning on July 15, the company will offer a Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroon at its locations across the U.S. In a statement, company executives said the new menu item was meant to appeal to millions of consumers suffering from celiac disease, which makes them intolerant of gluten in food products.

The new macaroon is certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, a branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group.

Tim Horton’s operates more than 4,200 restaurants in North America, with more than 800 of those located in the U.S.

Last month, American rival Dunkin’ Donuts (DNKN) announced that it would debut gluten-free cinnamon-sugar donuts and blueberry muffins at its restaurants later this year.

Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ Donuts join a number of large restaurant chains that have added gluten-free items to their menus over the last two years.

Shares of Tim Hortons rose fractionally in Wednesday morning trading.
