But it still received an overall safety recommendation

Added to the IIHS’s battery of crash tests just last year, the small overlap test is designed to simulate impacts with fixed objects like telephone poles or trees. Toyota‘s (TM) newly redesigned 2013 RAV4 small SUV received a “poor” rating in the front small overlap crash test, the lowest possible score, USA TODAY notes.

Despite the poor showing in that test, the RAV4 scored well in the IIHS’s other four crash tests and was rated a Top Safety Pick overall.

In addition to the RAV4, small SUVs from Ford (F), Fiat‘s (FIATY) Chrysler, Kia and Hyundai also received poor ratings in the front small overlap crash test.

Shares of Toyota were flat in Friday morning trading.
