toyotarav42013A new type Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) crash test produced dismal results for a popular small SUV.

Added to the IIHS’s battery of crash tests just last year, the small overlap test is designed to simulate impacts with fixed objects like telephone poles or trees. Despite the poor showing in that test, the RAV4 scored well in the IIHS’s other four crash tests and was rated a Top Safety Pick overall.

Shares of Toyota were flat in Friday morning trading.
