Tuesday Apple Rumors: iPhone 5S to Launch in Sept./Oct.

Later: The latest version of Apple‘s (AAPL[3]) iPhone will reach consumers in late September or early October[4], CNET notes. The estimate comes from Jeffries analyst Peter Misek, who says that sources in Apple’s supply chain indicate that the company will ramp up production of the iPhone 5S toward the end of July. Apple has also begun small batch production of its lower-cost iPhone. He expects the company to produce 15 million units of each iPhone in time for their launch early in the fall. Production of the iPhone 4S will be halted after the new iPhones debut. The iPhone 5S is expected to feature faster processors, an improved camera and possibly a fingerprint scanner. The lower-cost iPhone, aimed at emerging markets, is expected to come in a variety of colors. Rumors earlier this year indicated that the iPhone 5S could launch as early as July.

Nyet: All three of Russia’s primary wireless carriers have stopped offering the iPhone[5], Fortune notes. VimpleCom, the last major Russian carrier to offer the iPhone under its Beeline brand, dropped it last week in favor of Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Together, the three primary carriers account for about 80% of Russia’s 180 million wireless subscribers. The iPhone is being hurt in Russia by high import duties and taxes, a lack of subsidized pricing for smartphones and rising competition from other smartphone makers, which makes Apple’s contractual demands seem too high. Russians can still purchase iPhones through the Apple Store and from mobile device chain Svyaznoy.

Tech Grab: Israeli media reports say that Apple is in discussions to purchase PrimeSense,[6] the company that produces the sensor technology used in Microsoft‘s (MSFT[7]) Xbox Kinect, for $280 million, TheVerge notes. PrimeSense also produces technology used in 3D scanners and heat-sensing navigation systems for robots. Apple has been talking with PrimeSense about embedding its sensor technology in Apple devices. Apple acquired Israeli flash storage maker Anobit in 2012 for $400 million.
