A long-time search engine will meet its end next week as Yahoo (YHOO) continues to restructure operations.
Alta Vista, which debuted in 1995 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2003, will close on July 8. It is one of about a dozen Yahoo features and services that will be shut down over the next few months as the company looks to focus on its core businesses, DigitalSpy notes.
In addition to Alta Vista, Yahoo services that have been terminated, or will soon be terminated, include: Yahoo Browser Plus, Yahoo Axis, Yahoo WebPlayer, FoxyTunes, Yahoo RSS, Citizen Sports, Yahoo Downloads Beta, Yahoo Local API, Yahoo Term Extraction API, Yahoo Neighbors Beta and Yahoo Stars India.
The service closures are part of new CEO Marissa Mayer’s plan to reinvent the struggling Internet pioneer.
Yahoo has recent made a number of acquisitions, including blogging site Tumblr.
Shares of Yahoo climbed more than 1% in Monday morning trading.
