Android executive Hugo Barra is exiting Google (GOOG) following his breakup with a co-worker who is now said to be dating Google co-founder Sergey Brin — and possibly the reason for Brin’s separation from his wife.
Barra is joining Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi, which is often called the “Apple of China” because of its close imitation to the company.
Media organizations are reporting that office romances may be partly to blame for Barra’s leaving Google and Brin and his wife separating, though other sources deny a connection.
Until recently, Barra was dating Amanda Rosenberg, who works on Google Glass as its marketing manager. Their romance ended around the same time that Brin and his wife announced their separation.
The fallout could be more complicated as Brin’s wife, Anne Wojcicki, is the sister of Susan Wojcicki, Google senior vice president in charge of product management ads and commerce. Anne is the founder of 23andMe, a company that sells DNA tests at home with funding from Brin and Google itself.
Brin has an estimated worth of $22 billion, according to Forbes, making him the 21st richest man in the world.
