An Ohio family has endured much physical pain and mental anguish after Paul Fudacz donated his kidney to his sister Sarah to save her life, only to see it being thrown out by accident.
ABC News reports that the family is suing the University of Toledo Medical Center for medical negligence after one of the hospital’s nurses threw Paul’s kidney in the trash can. The 21-year-old was giving his kidney to his 24-year-old sister to save her life after discovering that his kidney was a perfect match for her.
Sarah was suffering end-stage renal disease before learning that her brother’s kidney could save her life. After what was supposed to be her scheduled surgery, she woke up and pulled up her shirt only to see there was no incision.
Paul woke up to pure agony and his sister was walking around fine because she didn’t have surgery as scheduled due to the hospital’s mistake. UTMC admitted to the nurse’s accidental disposal of the organ, but the institution is not admitting to providing the family with substandard medical care and is asking the state to dismiss the lawsuit.
