cow Lion Air Jet Strikes Cow on Runway[1]

It wasn’t the way 110 passengers on a Indonesian airline flight expected to end their trip[2].

As a Boeing (BA[3]) 737-800 owned by Lion Air landed at Jalaluddin airport in the eastern region of the country on Tuesday evening, it collided with one of at least three cows that had wandered onto the runway. Though the impact caused the plane to skid off the runway, no one was reported injured in the accident, the Associated Press notes.

It was the second accident for Lion Air this year. In April, a Lion Air jet fell short of a runway in Bali, ending up in the water. No one was killed in that incident.

The airport was closed for hours while investigators assessed the scene and evacuated passengers. The airport closure came during the heavy travel season associated with the Muslim holiday of Eid.

Runways were opened for air traffic on Wednesday. There was no word about what happened to the other cows.

Last month, a Southwest (LUV[4]) Boeing 737 careened across the runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport after its landing gear collapsed during landing[5]. Fortunately, only a few of the 155 passengers on board sustained minor injuries.
