A Chinese zoo is facing anger and criticism for fooling visitors into thinking a dog was a lion — which many believed until the “lion” began barking.
The zoo, located in the People’s Park of Luohe, in the central province of Henan, used a large, long-haired Tibetan mastiff and placed it in a cage marked “African lion.”
There were also other species incorrectly being labeled at the China zoo, including a white fox marked as a leopard and another dog being pawned off as a wolf, according to AFP.
Zoo visitors voiced anger at being cheated out of their money in an area where many struggle financially.
As first reported by the state-run Beijing Youth Daily, the chief of the park’s animal department said the dog was just being kept in an African lion cage for safety reasons and that it belonged to an employee.
