Look Out ESPN! New Fox Sports Channel to Debut Saturday

It will replace the motor sports-themed Speed channel

foxlogoOn Thursday, New’s Corp.’s (NWSA) Fox announced that its new cable TV sports network will premiere over the weekend.

The new network, Fox Sports, will be carried by all leading pay-TV services, including Dish Network (DISH), DirecTV (DTV) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). Those three providers had resisted Fox’s demands for higher fees to carry the channel. Sources told Reuters that the DirecTV and Time Warner Cable would carry the channel without a long-term contract and will not pay more to carrying Fox Sports compared to another Fox channel it will replace.

About 90 million U.S. homes will be able to view Fox Sports when it debuts on Saturday. It will replace the Speed channel on most systems. Fox had charged providers 22 cents per subscriber to carry Speed.

Fox Sports will carry a wide range of sports, including college football and Nascar races. It is aimed at competing directly with Disney‘s (DIS) ESPN. Plans to launch the new channel were announced in March.

Shares of News Corp. rose modestly in Friday morning trading.
