Until now, home pregnancy tests could let a woman know if she might be pregnant, but nothing more.
However, that all changes with Procter & Gamble‘s (PG) Clearblue Advanced Pregnancy Test with Weeks Estimator. In addition to determining whether a woman is pregnant, the test can also provide a rough estimate of how many weeks have passed from her last ovulation, the Daily News notes.
Physicians base estimates of fetal growth on the timing of a women’s last period and an examination of the fetus using an ultrasound machine. However, ultrasounds are not reliable until a woman has been pregnant for at least two months and many women don’t recall the exact date of their last period.
The home test kit includes two strips of material that measure different hormones. Procter & Gamble claims the new test has a 99% accuracy rate for pregnancy and a 93% rate of success in determining number of weeks since a woman’s last ovulation.
European women can already purchase the Clearblue test. It hits American store shelves on September 1.
Shares of Procter & Gamble rose slightly in Friday trading.
