According to TechCrunch’s Jordan Crook, Samsung (SSNLF) is sending out invitations for the “unpacking” of its next smartphone, almost certainly the Galaxy Note III. The event is taking place in Berlin on Sept. 4, about a year after the unveiling of the Galaxy Note II.
As usual, there are plenty of rumors flying about the device’s appearance and features, but no actual details.
We recently noted that Samsung is jumping ahead of Apple in consumer satisfaction surveys, particularly with its most recent devices. The Note II scored better than any of the iPhones on ASCI’s survey, so the performance of the (expected) Note III — along with the S4 — will be an important data point for measuring consumer sentiment.
Of course, we’re also coming up on the anniversary of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5 announcement (Sept. 12) … which means we’re about due for another iPhone announcement. The company has a lot riding on the announcement, especially in the wake of shrinking smartphone market share. The timing of this Samsung event allows the company to announce the Note III before the entire media starts analyzing and dissecting the next iPhone.
For all its product diversity, Samsung is still dependent on smartphone sales, which means the company is counting on good sales numbers from the device — especially after underwhelming S4 sales. As for whether the company’s next smartphone can overcome market saturation and “good enough” smartphones … we’ll just have to wait until September to find out.
As of this writing, Adam Benjamin did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
