Starbucks (SBUX) is under pressure to ban guns from its store by concerned mothers.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is asking mothers to participate in ”Skip Starbucks Saturday” on Aug. 24. Starbucks allows customers to carry loaded guns into its stores, so long as the store is located in a state with an open carry law. This has made Starbucks across the country meeting grounds for gun advocates to hold armed rallies in support of firearm freedoms. Moms Demand Action believes that this is dangerous, which is why it organized the Skip Starbucks Saturday event. The organization asks that mothers who skip Starbucks on Saturday donate the money they would use on coffee to it, reports PR Newswire.
Moms Demand Action also has a petition asking Starbucks to change its policies that allow customers to bring guns into its stores. The petition currently has over 13,000 signatures and will be presented to the company once it reaches 25,000 signatures.
“We comply with local laws and statutes in all the communities we serve,” Starbucks said in a statement. “That means we abide by the laws that permit open carry in 43 U.S. states. Where these laws don’t exist, openly carrying weapons in our stores is prohibited.”
