12 small cars were tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to see how safe they are.
Of the 12 cars tested 6 got acceptable results. The two and four door versions of Honda’s (HMC) Civic were the only cars to receive a “good rating”, which is the best rating possible, in the crash test. The other four vehicles to pass the test were the Dodge Dart, Ford (F) Focus, Hyundai Elantra and the 2014 Scion tC, which all got an “acceptable” rating. Three of the six cars that failed the test include General Motors’ (GM) Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic, as well as the Volkswagen (VLKAY) Beetle, which all got a “marginal” rating. The last three small cars to fail the test were the Nissan (NSANY) Sentra, the Kia Soul and 2014 Kia Forte, which all received a “poor” rating. Toyota Motor’s (TM) Corolla wasn’t tested because a new version of the vehicle will be out this fall, reports the Associated Press.
“These tests are very important and are something the automakers watch closely,” Dave Sullivan, manager of product analysis for AutoPacific Inc., told The Los Angeles Times. “It is pretty dramatic when you can go online and watch on video your car crash in a test.”
