Wednesday Apple Rumors: Apple Retains Global PC Lead

daily apple rumors 300x180 Wednesday Apple Rumors: Apple Retains Global PC Lead[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Title: During the second quarter, Apple (AAPL[3]) was the top global vendor of computers, including tablets[4], CNET notes. The analysis comes from market research firm Canalys, which puts Apple’s share of quarterly worldwide computer shipments at 17.1%. But that’s down from 19.4% during the same time last year. The decline in Apple’s market share comes from a sharp rise in the shipment of tablets running Google‘s (GOOG[5]) Android operating system. Macs and iMacs account for just 20% of Apple’s computer shipments according to Canalys’ survey. The second-ranked computer maker was Lenovo, which saw its share of global computer shipments edge up from 12.1% last year, to 12.9% this year. Following Lenovo were Hewlett-Packard (HPQ[6]), Samsung and Dell (DELL[7]). A Canalys analyst noted that if Apple hoped to keep its lead, it would have to release new tablet models. The company is widely expected to debut a fifth-generation iPad and updated iPad Mini this fall.

Resale: Apple’s iPhones hold their value[8] far better than smartphones made by rival Samsung, Fortune notes. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tracked prices for various iPhone and Samsung models resold on eBay and Chinese e-commerce website Taobao Marketplace. He found that the price of Samsung smartphones declined between 14.4% and 35.5% over three months. By contrast, only the iPhone 4S experienced a similar price decline on Chinese websites. Interestingly, the iPhone 4 saw its price rose 10.3% in the U.S. and 1.4% in China during the same period. Munster notes that the ability of the iPhone 5 to hold is value signals that consumers remain very loyal to the iPhone and are “not necessarily waiting on the next iPhone” launch to upgrade their devices.

Schooling: Apple has partnered with Creighton University to launch a student-run Apple Store on the Nebraska school’s campus[9], BusinessWeek notes. The 1,000-square-foot store is expected to open next week. It has been dubbed “iJay” in deference to the school’s mascot, a bluejay. Student workers will have the opportunity to earn money on the sales floor and receive management training with faculty guidance. Apple will also offer training and certification for product repair through the store. The school submitted a proposal for the store to Apple and then navigated a “rigorous” approval process. The new store will function as part of the university’s 501c3 nonprofit.
