The smartwatch category will get a big jolt today when Samsung unveils its new Galaxy Gear in Berlin.
Speculation has been running rampant about the new wrist computer’s features and capabilities. And there have been plenty of leaks. With a number of other companies, including Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) reportedly working on their own devices, Samsung has potentially scored by getting its product to market first, the Telegraph notes.
That could give it a big leg up on its primary mobile device competitor, Apple (AAPL). The iPhone-maker has been rumored to be developing its own smartwatch for about a year. Recent rumors suggest that the company has assembled a team of 100 designers and engineers to complete the device.
However, Apple’s smartwatch isn’t expected to debut until next year, meaning that Samsung’s Galaxy Gear will get to define the category before rivals even show off their devices.

The Galaxy Gear will also almost certainly feature bluetooth connectivity to connect to other mobile devices. It will be unveiled just as the IFA electronics show kicks off this week.
