A Best-Ever Mosquito Repellent May Be on the Horizon

But it will still need years of testing and approvals

MosquitoA scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service has developed a substance that tricks mosquitoes into ignoring people, preventing itchy bites.

Ulrich Bernier combined a number of chemicals, including homopiperazine and 1-methylhomopiperazine, to create a solution that seems to conceal the scent of human skin from the pesky flying insects. In testing, mosquitoes avoided subjects whose skin had been treated with the solution, National Geographic noted.

Research regarding the treatment was presented to the American Chemical Society this week. However, the treatment still needs years of more testing before it finds its way into stores.

Mosquito bites are of rising concern because they can transmit a range of dangerous diseases, including potentially fatal germs like the West Nile virus.

Earlier this year, Florida residents were warned about gallinippers, huge mosquitoes about 20 times larger than regular mosquitoes. The big bugs were spotted in Central Florida’s Seminole County.
