Amazon (AMZN) denied rumors that it will release a free smartphones this year.
The rumor that Amazon would offer free smartphones started on technology blog Jessicalessin.com. The blog reported on Sept. 6, that the company would offer a free smartphone. Drew Herdener, a spokesman for Amazon, said that the company wouldn’t be releasing a phone this year and that if Amazon were to offer a phone in the future, it wouldn’t be free. Amazon has been working with Chinese mobile-phone maker, Foxconn International Holdings, to create a mobile phone to compete with Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and devices using Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system. The online retailer has been buying patents concerning wireless technology to help prevent claims of infringement in the area, reports Bloomberg.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Amazon is working on a smartphone that has a 3D display without the need for special glasses. The phone would achieve this with eye tracking technology.
