gambia president 294x300 Country's President Says Homosexuality Is Huge Global Threat[1]Gay rights advocates continue to face vitriolic resistance from the regime of one African country[2].

Taking the stage at the United Nation General Assembly in New York this week, Yahya Jammeh, President of Gambia, used the venue to denounce homosexuality as one of the “biggest threats to human existence.” In fact, he ranked homosexuality along with greed and the desire to dominate the world as the top threats facing humanity, the Associated Press notes.

Jammeh, who came to power in 1994 in the wake of a military coup, said the three top threats eclipse all other natural disasters, combined. In the past, the Gambian president has promoted an herbal treatment that he said could cure AIDS, a claim medical experts rejected.

Five years ago, Jammeh warned homosexuals living in the country that they would be killed if they didn’t leave.

Last month, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who has publicly opposed gay marriage in his state, signed a law banning so-called “conversion therapy” for gay minors[3].

Over the summer, Minnesota and Rhode Island became the latest U.S. states to recognized gay marriages[4].
