Residents of one British town are trying to guess why someone in a clown suit is making night time appearances around their community.
The clown, usually carrying balloons, has been spotted repeatedly around Northampton, which is located to the north of London. Fueling suspicions that the sightings are part of a prank, the clown apparently has a Facebook (FB) page, the International Business Times notes.
The “Spot Northampton’s Clown” Facebook page has drawn 122,000 likes. On the webpage, the anonymous owner claims that he or she doesn’t “terrorize people,” but only wants “to be spotted.” The clown also rejected rumors that he or she is armed as “stupid rumors spread by stupid people.”
But the entire affair may have darker overtones. Police says that in prior decades some people who abducted children across the U.K. used clown costumes to conceal their identifies. Local law enforcement officials have advised Northampton residents to remain vigilant.
A rival dubbed “Boris, the Northampton Clown Catcher” has also appeared on Facebook promising to apprehend the mysterious clown.
