Facebook Helps Free Brothers in Jail for 1987 Murder

Two new witnesses claimed these men are innocent

Two Detroit brothers will be released from jail after spending over 25 years locked up for the murder of Robert Karey thanks to Facebook.

ABC News reports that Judge Lawrence Talon has dismissed all charges of felony murder, assault with intent to murder and felony firearm charges against Raymond and Tommy Highers. The charges were dropped after two witnesses heard about the imprisonment of the brothers through Facebook in 2009 and said that these men were not the killers.

John Hielscher and James Gianunzio said that they were present during the murder. The killing is believed to be drug-related and earlier evidence had locked up the Highers brothers. However, Hielscher and Gianunzio heard about the case and said that the two men they saw shooting Karey were black and the Highers brothers are white.

The 47 and 48-year-old siblings said that words can’t describe what this moment means to them during a family barbecue that their family threw after they got out of prison.
