A glossy and realistic-looking advertisement claiming that the Apple iPhones (AAPL) can be upgraded and made to be waterproof are tricking people into ruining their smartphones.
The iPhones are waterproof ad — which uses fonts and imagery from Apple’s marketing — can be seen all over social media sites. It falsely states that upgrading to the new iOS 7 will prevent damage to the phones if they come in contact with water.
A number of iPhone owners have fallen for the ad, taking to social media to warn others and bemoan their poor decision-making.
Users who believed the advert reportedly upgraded their iPhones and dunked the devices to test the feature, only to find that they had broken the expensive gadgets.
Some have taken to Twitter to vent their displeasure at being tricked. One user wrote “Ok whoever said IOS7 is waterproof GO F*** YOURSELF”.
The spoof advert reportedly originated on the notorious online forum 4chan, which regularly undertakes campaigns that hijack social media in order to trick the public.
On Monday, Apple announced that some 200 million users had upgraded to iOS 7.
