Fans Upset Over ‘Fifty Shades’ Casting

The film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey has sparked some controversy as some fans are unhappy with the casting for the movie.

CBS News reports that fans started an online petition to remove Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam as the protagonists of big-screen adaptation of the E. L. James novel. This petition comes only two days after the studio confirmed the casting for the film’s lead roles.

The online request is asking for ‘White Collar’ actor Matt Bomer and Alexi Bledel from ‘Gilmore Girls’ to play the roles of Christan Grey and Anastasia Steele respectively. As of Wednesday mid-afternoon, over 20,000 fans have already signed the petition and this number continues to grow.

Despite the opposition towards Johnson and Hunnam, the Fifty Shades of Grey producers are sticking with their guns and backing up their casting choices. One of the movie’s producers tweeted that “there is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”

Fifty Shades of Grey is being produced by Comcast’s (CMCSA) Focus Features and Universal Pictures, and it is scheduled for an Aug. 2014 release.
