jersey boardwalk[1]Residents of the Jersey Shore are reeling today after a huge fire raced through a popular boardwalk last night[2].

Dozens of shops and restaurants along the boardwalk that runs between Seaside Park and Seaside Heights, N.J., were reduced to rubble by the blaze, which ignited on Friday evening and took about 100 firefighters hours to put out, Reuters notes.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, though some media reports say it may have been sparked by electrical wires near a custard stand. Six blocks of the boardwalk commercial district spanning the two towns were destroyed by the blaze.

Local officials say the fire is a particularly harsh blow since the boardwalk had been rebuilt after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged the Jersey Shore last fall[3]. Seaside Heights, the playground for the cast of MTV’s infamous Jersey Shore, was particularly hard hit by the storm, which sent its iconic roller coaster into the ocean.

Looking for a bright spot in the carnage, Seaside Heights’ mayor noted that because the boardwalk had been so recently rebuilt, the city still had the plans for everything the fire destroyed and would “get it back up” as quickly as possible.

Fortunately, no serious injuries or deaths have been linked to the blaze so far[4], CBS News notes.
