Warner Brothers (TWX) and JK Rowling have teamed up to create a new film franchise set in New York City.
Daily News reports that the first movie in the upcoming franchise is inspired by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a Hogwarts textbook written by the fictional Newt Scamander. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut by writing the screenplay for the first film in the franchise.
Rowling said that the series will not be a prequel or a sequel to the Harry Potter series but simply an extension of the wizarding world. The story will take place 70 years before the Harry Potter books in New York City.
The Harry Potter books are some of the best-selling novels of all time with over 450 million sold. The movies have also been a massive success, raking in $7.7 billion worldwide.
