A Florida man who wanted to get a cat off a busy stretch of highway created a multi-car crash that killed an elderly woman and caused rush-hour traffic to back up for nearly five miles.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the fatal collision was caused when Michael James Schneider, 35, stopped near Deerfield Beach and walked onto the highway to try and rescue a cat he saw crossing the road.
“[He] walked into the center lane, was hit by a vehicle,” Sgt. Mark Wysocky said. “That vehicle then veered to the right with the [man] riding on the hood, ran off the road and hit the [man's] pickup truck, hit the guardrail and ejected the [man] off the hood of the car into the grass shoulder.”
Mary Jane S. Alston, 75, was pronounced dead at the nearby hospital as a result of her injuries sustained in the collision.
Schneider himself remains in critical condition.
The cat was killed in the accident.
