Fifteen years after he turned completely blue while treating a skin condition, Paul Karason has died after suffering a heart attack and stroke.
His blueness made him an Internet celebrity when he appeared on The Today Show in 2008. Many called him “Papa Smurf” because of his condition.
Karason started turning blue … after he began using a special silver-based preparation to treat a skin condition. He also had been drinking colloidal silver, a product consisting of silver particles suspended in liquid.
Karason began using a silver preparation to treat a bad case of dermatitis that had broken out on his face. He took the silver in colloidal form that he produced himself, using electrolysis.
Silver had been used for ages in fighting infection because of its antibacterial properties. Use fell in the 1930s after penicillin was developed.
Karason was a recluse toward the end of his life and was a fan of the History Channel.
